It is largely plot-driven, but manages to explore some questions along the way regarding the athletes' daily lives, their methods, their personalities, as well as to offer some psychological insights regarding motivation, aesthetics, and failure.
Generation Iron 2 is multi-purpose and multi-directional, and asks more questions than it answers. I enjoyed this facet of the film, as I am a very philosophical person.
And who is the judge of that? If I had to offer some criticism of the film, it would simply be in terms of editing. It seemed scattered and ill-paced at times, and the interviewer that popped in and out was more of a distraction than a help.
That said, the documentary was successful overall, provided you understand its goals, and that it is very different than its predecessor.
Let me first say I really enjoyed it- but then I re watched the original "Generation Iron" and realized where this sequel fell short.
Gone is the rich plot of the Mr. Olympia and rivalry of Phil vs Kai. Also the absence of a powerful narrator hurr the movie.
Instead- this film takes an interesting look at the evolving world of "social media" bodybuilders, with several other sub plots. I found it very good as a documentary on social media fitness and the subculture as a whole.
It really shouldn't be called generation iron 2 though. I still bought it and will re watch. As a fan of body building and BB documentaries, and as an aspiring gym rat myself I am absolutely in love with Generation Iron.
I was so excited for the second one. Especially since there would be a new documentary to watch watched a lot of them.
However, it was pretty disappointing. The interviews were boring, no storyline or narrator There was maybe 5 mins for each female and that was it.
Would have been nice to see more of a balance between the men and the ladies. Maybe follow a couple of them to the Olympia and the current contending males again.
I even watched it twice to make sure I didn't like it. If you're a fan of the original you're not missing much here, there are other better documentaries out there.
It was just ok. I loved the 1st Generation Iron movie and was really looking forward to 2. Unfortunately everything about the movie was actually kind of boring.
